4 Places to Visit in Indianapolis This Winter
When the weather turns chilly in Indianapolis, many locals are tempted to stay in to avoid the cold climate. Instead of staying home and coming down with a case of cabin fever, check out these fun wintertime attractions. Some of the indoor spots make it easy to stay warm, while the outdoor attractions are enjoyable if you bundle up.
- Circle of Lights
For more than five decades, thousands of Indianapolis residents have gathered during the holiday season to take part in the spectacular display that takes place downtown each year. Over 52 strands of garland and nearly 4,800 lights are used to create a 242-foot display, along with peppermint sticks that surround the monuments and 26 giant toy soldiers. This year’s display will mark the first time the event’s sponsors have used LED lighting, which is part of an initiative to raise funds to improve the display and keep it alive in Indy.
- Indiana State Museum
If it’s too cold outside, head indoors and spend some time at the Indiana State Museum. It’s in the downtown area of the city within White River State Park. You can learn more about the history of the state, as well as where leaders are planning to take it in the future. Exhibits include contemporary art pieces from some of the top local artists, as well as those dedicated to some of the animals that once roamed, including the dire wolves and mastodons.
In the near future, the museum will host a special exhibit titled “Kids Curate.” It will showcase projects curated by 10-12 year-olds from the local public schools, along with hands-on and interactive activities. Another upcoming exhibit is “The Color of Style,” which includes fashion pieces from the past, as well as a way to figure out which color looks best on you.
- Chocolate Cafe
Warm up with a delicious cup of hot cocoa or another sweet treat at the Chocolate Cafe, located in Monument Circle. It’s one of the fastest-growing chocolate companies in the nation. When it started, the company made chocolates for the University of Notre Dame. In its downtown shop, patrons can enjoy decadent hot chocolate, handmade treats by the pound, and delicious ice cream. During the winter months, you can also pick up some special holiday gifts for everyone on your list.
- Catch a Play
Each year, the Indiana Repertory Theatre puts on a production of “A Christmas Carol,” the beloved holiday tale. Attending this play is a tradition among many locals as they get into the holiday spirit and listen to the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his visits from the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. The production celebrates the power of love and kindness, telling a story of the main character’s journey to redemption.
Enjoy a wintertime outing with your loved ones during the cold season in Indianapolis. With so much to see and do in the city, it’s easy to find something that everyone in your crew will enjoy.
